Here are all the QBullets along with their meanings. Many are new, so check it out. New QBullets are always being added, and if you have any ideas or comments, please email me
.
QBullets are copyrighted but free to use in your own Web pages.
- OutLink
The globe warns you that the link will take you to a totally new Web site (whether or not it happens to reside on the same physical server).
- List Page
Links to a page that is entirely or mostly a list of links to other pages. Quite useful.
- Fill-Out Form
Links to a page with an interactive fill-out form. Often used for email pages (but see below).
- MailTo: Link
A link like this will put up a standard "MailTo" window, if your browser supports it. If your site offers both MailTo URLs and email forms (and it should), you'll need both
and
to distinguish the two. Otherwise,
could also be used for links to email forms.
- New Marker
Some people get all fancy with stars and exclamation points, but I think this is still the best bullet for annotating the new items in your Web pages. Unlike other QBullets, I place this one before the text to be annotated.
- Updated Marker
There have been a lot of requests for this one. As with the
QBullet, place this one before the text to be annotated.
- Downloadable File
Links to an FTP archive and immediately begins to download an individual file to your hard drive.
- FTP Directory
Links to an FTP Directory (rather than an individual archive). While
indicates that a download will begin immediately after you click a link,
tells you that you will see an FTP list of downloadable software to pick from.
Telnet
Links to a Telnet site.
News
Links to a News site.
- Picture
Either a standalone JPEG image or an HTML page dominated by a single picture.
- Sound File
Downloads and plays an AU sound file.
Virtual Reality
3-D movie glasses mean a QTVR file or a VRML site
Text Only
For links that connect to Gopher or FTP text files. Warn people if you're going to make them look at ugly monospaced fonts!
- Movie
Downloads and plays an MPEG movie. I love this one, and I wish there were more movies out there it could be attached to!
- Download Time
You can indicate how large a picture or file at the other end of a link is by using these QBullets:
Less than 80K
;
80K-200K
;
200K-700K
;
700K-1000K
;
more than 1000K
.
These QBullets are designed to look good in combination with other QBullets, such as

and
.
Feel free to use these QBullets to indicate different byte amounts, but keep them consistent within your own site.
- Close Up
I don't have a use in mind for this one, but it's a beauty so I thought I'd include it.
Scroll Up
Links to a point further up on the same page.
Scroll Down
Links to a point further down on the same page.
- Smiley Replacement
You know, the smiley is bad enough :-) .... ha ha just kidding wink chortle bat eyelashes twitter and so on. However, I have actually seen people use this pathetic ASCII convention on the Web! Is the Web for dumb terminals? Dumb people?
Rather than try to stamp out this annoying trend, I'd like to offer a graphically responsible alternative. If you're especially nostalgic, you can use
and I've even included a
so you can re-create all your favorite winks, astonishments, frowns, wry grins and whatever else it is that is now done so incomprehensibly with brackets and colons. Ha ha. Just kidding
.
- Note
Not widely used. Indicates that the page to come is a short explanatory page (maybe a definition?) with no other links going out from it.
- CGI Script Link
Anything could happen when you click on a script link!
- Private Page
You will have to fill out a password authentication form before you can access the page at the other end of this link.
- Help
Lets you know that the link brings up help about the hypertext, rather than some actual application of the hypertext. For example, on a link reading "Download" you could add a
to indicate that the link explains how to download rather than actually starting a download.
Note: All the links in the QBullet list are fake dead-end links, used only to show what the QBullets look like next to a link.
